Spiky Collar is one of a series of neck pieces I made using my hand-painted paste papers. This piece is part of my investigation into creating dimensionality from a flat material. The spikes are hollow and the whole piece is stitched together using embroidery floss threaded through pre-pierced holes. This collar measures 9.5″ diameter and is fastened by a purple-colored silk cord.
I’ve always thought that artists have a heightened ability to perform repetitive tasks without boredom — for me it was sawing when I worked with metal, and now it’s piercing and stitching paper. That activity becomes a meditative process.
